Alice in Wonderland Invades Manila

1:07:00 AM 0 Comments
Tumble down an enchanted rabbit hole with Alice into a world with talking animals and objects and whimsical wordplay for a fantastical new adventure from Repertory Philippines’ Theatre for Young Audiences 2013 offering with the staging of  Alice in Wonderland

I was so surprised that it's the first time Dani Gana has played a main role in Alice in Wonderland as Alice yet she’s quite good in acting for a first timer as a professional actress. She has effectively captured the audiences’ attention and the kids’ laughter from her acting, singing and dancing.

It’s also a pleasure seeing Liesl Batucan as one of the characters. Her powerful voice as a story teller has made even the adults curious on the magical story to unfold in front of their eyes even though they already know what the story is.

When the rabbit came out, played by Nacho Tambunting, the kids were all shouting, calling their parents and pointing at the rabbit who came from the audience part running to the stage shouting, "I'm late, I'm late!"

I think the most magical part of the show is when Alice met the caterpillar. You can hear the kids' reaction: "waah!" "wow!" "ohh!" during the show! Looking at kids getting excited with their widened eyes is such a beautiful treat for parents watching the show.

As I am expecting, the costumes Raven Ong made were just perfect for all the characters. They've helped made the audience live a vicarious experience through the characters! During the Q and A portion with the press, the actors and actresses said that the costumes have helped them further internalized their role since the costumes looks very true to their characters.
Oliver Usison as the walrus (at the center).
Bituin Escalante as the Queen of Hearts (right)
I've always find the Mad Hatter crazy and creepy. In this show, he might be crazy but he's not creepy and more fun looking. The set of the tea party is also very inviting! I love how huge their tea set is! It's just something each little girl would love!
James Stacey as the March Hare, Nic Campos as the Mouse and Joel Trinidad as Mad Hatter.
Look at how huge the cups are! So fun, right? :)
Alice in Wonderland is now playing in Onstage, 2/F Greenbelt 1 until December 15, 2013! To know more about the schedules of the show, call 571-6926, 571-4941, email shows@repertoryphilippines.com or visit their website at www.repertoryphilippines.com. Tickle your minds, relax and enjoy the magical wonderland of Alice in Wonderland! It's truly a show that one shouldn't miss.

Ms. Joy Virata during the welcome remarks.
Alice in Wonderland is directed by non-other than the Mother of Repertory Philippines's Children Theater: Ms. Joy Virata! I owe my love of theater to her! It was her show years ago when I was still in grade school that I fell in love with theater! :) If you have kids, I recommend you to bring them and watch this. You never know if they'll fall for theater like I did. ;)

It's back to my favorite time of Repertory Philippines' season! Repertory Philippines’ Theatre for Young Audiences (AKA Children's Theatre) which was started by Ms. Joy Virata, had its first production in 1992 featuring "Sleeping Beauty."

Even though I'm all grown up, these shows bring out my young heart and fun childhood memories which is fun to reminisce.

In celebration of its 21st year of producing well-loved musicals for children of all ages, Repertory Philippines’ Theatre for Young Audiences proudly announces its 2013 offering with the staging of "Alice in Wonderland."
"Alice in Wonderland" is set to open on August 17, 2013 and will run until December 15, 2013 at Onstage, 2/F, Greenbelt 1, Paseo de Roxas cor. Legazpi St., Makati City.

The cast is composed of the following: Dani Gana and Chaye Mogg (Alice), Nacho Tambunting, Jim Ferrer and Reb Atadero (Rabbit), Liesl Batucan (Duchess), Bituin Escalante and Natalie Everett (Queen of Hearts), Becca Coates and Janine Tolentino (Storyteller / Flora), Rachel Coates and Marie Delgado (Storyteller / Dora), Oliver Usison and Kendrick Ibasco (Walrus / King of Hearts), Nic Campos and Joel Trinidad (French Mouse / Carpenter / Mad Hatter), Onyl Torres and James Stacey (Caterpillar / March Hare), Antonio Lane and Jay Pangilinan (Mock Turtle), Reymund Domingo and Khevin Almario (Duck / Kettle), Edward Briones (Lory / Baby), Dingdong Rosales (Lory / Baby / Tweedledum), Josh Ramirez and Chino Veguillas (Dodo / Tweedledee / Doormouse), Shalee Vicencio and Gold Soon (Moon / Court Member), Ina Salonga (Tears / Court Member), Kyla Rivera (Tears / Oyster / Door), Clark Francis dela Riva and Bobby Superales (Door / Oyster) and Bym Buhain (Door / Tweedledum).
Joel Trinidad as Mad Hatter

For over 150 years, "Alice in Wonderland" has captivated children with its timeless and whimsical story written by Lewis Caroll. The classic tale is now re-told in an enchanting adaptation with book and lyrics by Jim Eiler. Music is also by Jim Eiler and Jeanne Bargy.

With toe-tapping lively music and highly-spirited dance numbers, "Alice in Wonderland" follows Alice through the looking glass and down the rabbit hole in a whirlwind of twists and turns through an enchanting Wonderland. In this whimsical fantastic journey, Alice meets all of Wonderland's famous and popular residents brought to life with full flair and color including: the King & Queen of Hearts, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Gryphon, Mock Turtle, Dormouse, Mad Hatter and March Hare, the Dutchess, Cheshire Cat and of course, the White Rabbit, and a whole world of characters for the audience to enjoy.
Bituin Escalante as Queen of Hearts

Alice’s strange adventures unexpectedly changes her size, attends a tea party with the March Hare and the Mad Hatter, and even testifies at the trial of a knave who has stolen some tarts from the Queen of Hearts!

Co-presented by the City of Makati, "Alice in Wonderland" is a perfect treat for the whole family.

The artistic and creative team of "Alice in Wonderland" is led by Joy Virata (Director), Liesl Batucan (Assistant Director), Baby Barredo (Musical Director), Jamie Wilson (Technical Director), Gino Gonzales (Set Designer), Raven Ong (Costume Designer), John Batalla (Lights Designer), Lisa, Tintin and Cecille Martinez (Choreographers), Onyl Torres (Vocal Coach) and Jay Pangilinan (Musical Arranger).
Reb Atadero as the Rabbit

I am excited with what Raven Ong will be creating for the costumes. He really makes wonderful costumes that tickles one's imagination. I can still remember the past costumes which he did!

The production staff is composed of Gidget Tolentino (Production Manager), Ayam Barredo (Company Manager), Jojo Amboy (Stage Manager), Pol Roxas (Sound Technician), Pablito Salvador (Lighting Technician) and Adul Lasin (Set Execution and Scenic Artist).

Since 1967- 2012, Repertory Philippines has produced well-known shows as Les Miserables, A Chorus Line, Carousel, West Side Story, Man of La Mancha, Fiddler On The Roof, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Evita, Woman in Black, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Equus, Private Lives, Amadeus, Man of La Mancha, Jekyll and Hyde and more than 300 other plays.  The works of Shakespeare are also a regular part of Repertory Philippines’ program.  Some productions include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, Much Ado About Nothing, and Romeo and Juliet.  For young audiences, the very popular REP Children’s Theater has produced musicals such as Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin (Jr.), Jack and the Beanstalk, Seussical and The Wizard Of Oz.

This 2013, Repertory Philippines starts their season with Boeing Boeing by Marc Camoletti and translated by Beverley Cross and Francis Evans which will be directed by Miguel Faustmann.

Boeing Boeing is about "an architect living in Paris has been successfully juggling three flight attendant fiancées with his housekeeper reluctantly playing romantic air-traffic controller as they fly in and out of his swank bachelor pad. But when an old school pal visits, things get rather turbulent. Schedules change, flights are delayed and chaos ensues in this whirl of mayhem and matchmaking."

David Bianco will essay the role of Mr. Bernard Whitford, an American architect businessman living in Paris ---  a swinging bachelor. He is a combination of Don Draper and Jack Tripper. A playboy who juggles love affairs with three air hostesses who touch down briefly but lovingly in his apartment between flights.

Topper Fabregas will play the role of the unworldly Robert, Bernard’s boyhood friend, newly arrived from Wisconsin.

Bringing to mind fantasy drawings from a vintage Esquire or  Playboy for a portfolio of international dream girls are the three fiancées: Giannina Ocampo as  Gabriella, the sentimental, lusty Italian stewardess. Carla Dunareanu as Gretchen, the hilarious, aggressive, dominating but thin-skinned German stewardess. Jennifer Blair-Bianco as Gloria, the Southern belle with upbeat disposition take-charge health-obsessed American stewardess.

Baby Barredo, Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Repertory Philippines, will be making a comeback on stage and will play the role of Bertha, Bernard's long-suffering housekeeper who is a chic, black-clad philosopher. A French existentialist maid who loves nothing more than to complain. Ms. Joy Virata is alternate.

Boeing Boeing opening on January 25, 2013! Playdates includes January 26 ; February 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 & 16, 2013 – 8:00PM and January 26, 27 ; February 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 & 17, 2013 – 3:30PM

Repertory Philippines' next show will be No Way to Treat a Lady with book, music and lyrics by Douglas J. Cohen based on the novel by William Goldman.

No Way To Treat a Lady is a devilish blend of humor, romance, and murder in a theatrically charged musical comedy thriller based on a bestselling novel and renowned movie. It will be starred by Michael Williams and Carla Guevara-Laforteza to be directed by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo

The third show is the one to be highly awaited for! If you remember this song by Simon and Garfunkel, I'm sure you'll know the title of the show:

And here's to you, Mrs. Robinson

Jesus loves you more than you will know (Wo, wo, wo)
God bless you please, Mrs. Robinson
Heaven holds a place for those who pray
(Hey, hey, hey...hey, hey, hey)

If you've guessed it right, you're probably a fan of the film just like me! :) The Graduate on film was directed by Mike Nichols which starred the then young Dustin Hoffman as Benjamin Broddock whose raging hormones lead to the seduction of Mrs. Robinson played by Anne Bancroft. The film is adapted for the stage by Terry Johnson based on the novel by Charles Webb and the screenplay by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry.

The show will be starred by the sexy la divina of Philippine Theater Ms. Cherie Gil together with Reb Atadero and Cara Barredo. It will be directed by Jaime Del Mundo.

Because of the show's contents, it will be strictly for adults 18 & above only. The playdates will be on April 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 & 27, 2013 – 8:00PM and April 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 & 28, 2013 – 3:30PM.

The fourth show will be Repertory Philippines' Children's Theater which has been one of the most awaited shows every year by a lot of schools & parents. This year, they're staging one of the most loved shows of all times, Alice in Wonderland.

Follow Alice as she goes into a magical world where she meets lots of interesting characters who will be teaching her life lessons that she will never forget. Playdates will be on August 17 – December 15, 2013. The show will be directed by Joy Virata.

The last show by Repertory Philippines for 2013 is The Producers!

As a big Broadway musical, The Producers once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. This classic cult comedy broke all records and won a record 12 Tony Awards - including Best Musical -  more than any other musical ever!

Directed by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Jaime del Mundo with playdates on November 15 – December 15, 2013. Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan. Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks.

Often called the “most professional English-speaking theater company in the country,” REPERTORY PHILIPPINES is the only company in the Philippines that has been doing what it knows best—performing shows of wholesome, quality entertainment—so that Philippine audiences can enjoy the pleasures and gain the lessons uniquely offered by the theater experience.

In fact, if you've been following my blog, my first theater experience was with Repertory Philippines and I've fell in love with theater then, hence my blog is filled up with a lot of entries about shows I've watch. Thanks to Repertory Philippines!
