Walk the World and End Hunger

Can walking and ending of hunger work on the same line? For United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), combining this two is possible every year!

According to the study of United Nations, one of the main cause of death for children under five years old is because of hunger which leads to malnutrition and it becomes a threat to global health around the world.

On May 29, 2011 (Sunday), at the SM Mall of Asia, starting 5am to 10am, supporters of WFP will come together to either do the 2-km walk, 5-km run and the 10-km group run. Proceeds from this event will be going to approximately 80,000 school children in Maguindanao, Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur.

During the launch of Walk the World 2011 yesterday, their biggest supporter, Philippine Pizza, Inc. (Pizza Hut and Taco Bell) sent their CSR Manager Cyril Gonzales to discuss the importance of CSR in a big company like their company. Giving back to the society does not only give Philippine Pizza, Inc. a good image but it also makes them feel accomplished that they are very fortunate to be able to help these children. Aside from helping with feeding the children, Pizza Hut was also in charge for the food and venue of the launch.

Other company supporters include the following -

TNT Express Worldwide Philippines Inc. that sent their Country Human Resources Director Cecilia Casas who have participated the walk since it began here in the Philippines,

Unilever Philippines, Inc. sent their Senior Brand Manager for Knorr Bajeng Cruz who discussed that their nutricious products including Knorr are being used to feed the children in Mindanao which makes their company pass on their blessings to the unfortunate children who are now quite fortunate because they're there to help.

Stephen Anderson, United Nations World Food Programme - Philippines Country Director and Representative discussed how they have been helping the children in Mindanao. He explained how school supplies, good teachers and nice clothing are not enough for the children to study properly in school. He showed how the problem of hunger can actually affect a child's performance and thus be dangerous to a child's health. So before anything else, it is very important for these children to have a proper nutrition.

It is also very surprising to learn from Mr. Anderson that for just PhP10, WFP can already provide a nutricious meal to a child at school.

A video of KC Concepcion, who is a very active advocate of WFP, was also shown during the launch to explain to the attendees the colorful life of these children in the south. They actually do not look like they're Filipinos but they are and they need our help.

Just in case you're wondering what is WFP? WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. On average, they feed more than 90 million people in more than 70 countries. So, isn't it great to be able to help them feed more and more hungry kids?

At the end of the launch, the supporting companies, Mr. Anderson and the attendees were asked to sign their petition to end hunger on a footprint. These footprints were asked to be posted on the Wall Against Hunger which will again be brought out during the walk on May 29, 2011.
