The SM Group of Companies, through the SM Foundation's disaster relief program, Operation Tulong Express, has started relief operations in typhoon-stricken areas across Luzon and the Visayas region to provide assistance to the families greatly affected by super typhoon Yolanda.
Survivors receive aid from “Operation Tulong”, an SM Foundation relief drive, in typhoon-ravaged Cebu.
“The SM Group of Companies has mobilized SM Foundation’s Tulong Express disaster relief facility. We are distributing 50,000 kalinga packages to typhoon victims in Tacloban, Samar, Panay Island (Iloilo, Antique, Capiz), Cebu, Bicol and Bacolod," said SM Foundation executive director Debbie Sy.

Following the onslaught of “Yolanda,” SM Foundation volunteers and partners were able to immediately prepare 20,000 relief goods and have repacked 30,000 more for distribution to various areas at once. The Kalinga relief packages consist of bottles of mineral water, rice, ready-to-eat ulam packs, and instant noodles. A total of 50,000 relief packs are allocated in the following areas, Tacloban (20,000 packs); Cebu (10,000); Panay Island (7,000); Samar (5,000); Bohol (4,000); Bicol (3,000); and Bacolod (1,000). The distribution is done in cooperation with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Philippine Air Force, local government units, SM Malls, SM Hypermaket, SM Supermarket, and SaveMore.

SM Foundation also accepts donations in kind through Tulong Express booths in all SM Malls nationwide or in cash deposited at BDO account name: SM Foundation Inc.-Operation Tulong Express with savings account number: 15000 70694. SM Foundation will issue receipt of donations for deposit slips faxed to 831-8282. For SM employees, they were able to raise more than Php100,000 for the Bohol earthquake victims. Currently, the employees are raising funds for the victims of typhoon Yolanda. While for its other ongoing relief efforts, the Foundation vowed that it will push through with the assistance it is currently extending to other regions in the country that were hit by previous calamities, such as the earthquake that struck Bohol and Cebu in October and typhoon Maring which battered various parts of the Philippines last August.

"Grease" Comes Back to Manila!

2:00:00 PM 0 Comments
After more than a decade since this musical was last performed in Manila, 9Works Theatrical returns with a spankin’ new production of "Grease The Musical" to culminate its 2013 season that started with a February production of "They’re Playing Our Song."

The show is directed by seasoned actor and 9Works Theatrical's artistic director Robbie Guevara, includes songs from the hit movie such as “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “You’re the One that I Want” that weren’t included in the original stage play.

Leading this handsome cast is TV star and stage veteran Gian Magdangal who plays the good-looking and confident leader of the T-Birds, Danny Zuko. Gian played as Robbie Hart in "The Wedding Singer" and Roger in 9WT’s three sold-out productions of "Rent The Musical."

Playing the role of the cute and naïve Sandra Dee-type Sandy Dumbrowski is singer-actress Frencheska Farr who was once the winner of the hit reality TV show, "Are You The Next Big Star? While she is a newcomer to the stage, her critically acclaimed performance in the movie musical "Emir" will certainly lend its hand as she steps into shoes of the iconic role.
Gian Magdangal
Also returning to 9Works Theatrical is singer-actress and MYX VJ Iya Villania who will be playing the role of the sarcastic and outspoken leader of the Pink Ladies, Betty Rizzo. She last appeared onstage as Julia Sullivan in "The Wedding Singer."
Iya Villania
Alternating with Iya for the role of Betty Rizzo is Jennifer Blair–Bianco, a fresh face for 9 Works Theatrical! I last saw her as Gloria Hawkins in "Boeing Boeing" (Click here for my article about it). Jennifer is the wife of David Bianco who is the current Marketing Director of Repertory Philippines.
Jennifer Blair-Bianco
Another fresh face is Rafa Siguion-Reyna as Kenickie, the tough-looking second-in-command of the T-Birds. Schooled in voice and acting abroad, the film and TV star, and recent Cosmo Bachelor, makes his Philippine stage debut.
Rafa Siguion-Reyna
And to add to the fresh face to grace the 9Work Theatrical's stage is TV actress and Magic 89.9 radio host Carla Dunareanu! If you've read my article on "Boeing Boeing" before (there's a link above this paragraph too), she's the German stewardess. Carla plays Marty, the “beauty” of the Pink Ladies. Carla is thrilled to make her Philippine musical theater debut with this show!
Carla Dunareanu
The six actors will be joined by some of the country’s finest theater performers. Making up the rest of the T-Birds are Reb Atadero as the mischievous Roger, Mark Tayag as Italian-American lady-killer Sonny Latierri, and RCS’ Vince Lim as the guitar-playing Doody. Rounding up the rest of the Pink Ladies are Peachy Atilano as the good-natured, “beauty school dropout” Frenchie, and Sarah Facuri as the awkward and compulsive-eating Jan.
The rest of the Rydell High population will be played by Carlos Canlas as the all-American, rockstar “greaser” Johnny Casino, James Stacey as the fast-talking DJ Vince Fontaine, Harold Cruz as the awkward class valedictorian Eugene Florcyzk, Sab Jose as the enthusiastic cheerleader Patty Simcox, Angela Padilla as the no-nonsense English teacher Miss Lynch, and Carmelle Ros as the loud-mouthed dancer from St. Bernadette, Cha-cha Digregorio.

For this production of "Grease", executive producer Santi Santamaria and director Robbie Guevara have invited a few surprise guests – all notable actors of stage and screen – to fill in the role of Teen Angel who serenades the character of Frenchie during “Beauty School Dropout.” Expect a different Teen Angel every time you come see the show.

For the artistic team, Robbie is joined by Lorenz Martinez as assistant director, Joseph Tolentino as musical director for instrumentation, Sweet Plantado-Tiongson as musical director for vocals, Arnold Trinidad and Francis Matheu as choreographers, Mio Infante as scenographer (set and costume designer), John Batalla as lighting designer, Chuck Ledesma as sound designer, Myrene Santos as hair and makeup designer, Twinkle Zamora for costume execution, Leo Castillo as photographer, Tin Samson as playbill editor, and Larry Palma as graphic designer.
Heading the production team is executive producer Santi Santamaria, with Anna Santamaria as company manager, GM Hernandez as marketing manager, Jonjon Martin as PR manager, Sunshine Domine as production manager, and Aries Alcayaga as stage manager.

For over 40 years, "Grease" has remained one of the world’s most popular and beloved musicals. Time Magazine even dubbed its 2007 Broadway revival as the “#1 Musical of the Year.” Now Danny, Sandy, Rizzo, Kenickie, and the Rydell gang are back, ready to bop and hand-jive at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, all weekends from November 9 to December 1, 2013. "Grease" will have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday galas at 8pm, Saturday matinees at 3:30pm and Sunday matinees at 4pm.

Jojo Riguerra and Jayvhot Galang

The play tells the story of Maxie who belongs to a family of crooks living in a downtown community where daily living is a struggle to survive, in ways legal or not. Despite the sad reality of his community, Maxie grew up as a cheerful, positive, and generous adolescent, always ready to cheer everyone up. With the help of his friends, he manages to overcome hurdles through banter, romantic movie marathons, and improvised beauty contests. In the absence of a mother, Maxie takes care of his family’s needs, and they never fail to shower him with their unconditional love, acceptance and protection. However, Maxie’s devotion and loyalty to his family, together with his unassuming innocence, will be challenged when he falls in love with Victor. Not only is Victor years older, but he is also the very person Maxie’s family would consider an enemy: an honest policeman ready to uphold the law.
To know more about the colorful life of Maxie, please do watch the show! It's one of my favorite gay films of all time and I'm really excited how it will look like on stage!

The Joyful Secret Behind Surprises

4:30:00 AM 0 Comments
Did you know that surprises make people remarkably happier?

Surprises have, indeed, powerful effects. Psychologist Norbert Schwarz conducted a classic study where it was found that a small but pleasant surprise, such as finding 10 cents, uplifts a person’s mood. Schwarz repeatedly placed a coin near a copy machine where it can be easily seen. When the subjects who found the coin were surveyed shortly thereafter, their overall satisfaction with life was significantly higher than those who did not find the coin.

While the study was conducted at a time when a coin can buy more than it does today, the basic conclusion is that even a tiny, pleasant surprise can improve one’s disposition.
Norbert Schwarz (photo from http://rcgd.isr.umich.edu/seminars/Winter2011/)
It’s not the value of what you find. It’s that something positive happened to you,” stressed Schwarz.

Whether you’re a kid or a grown up, you will not be able to resist the joy and pleasure of discovering something new. Bent on providing this kind of joy, a unique chocolate treat, Kinder Joy is finally arriving in the Philippines to spread delightful surprises.
Feel good and experience a huge surprise happening on October 19 & 20, 2013, from 10am to 10pm at the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Activity Center. Expect fun-filled activities and awesome surprises on top of yet another big reveal—a special guest who will surely charm Filipino kids and their families.

Come and explore the amazing world of surprises!

Today is World Food Day

2:39:00 AM 0 Comments
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is marking World Food Day on 16 October by highlighting the power of nutrition to transform individuals, societies and economies, and the need to make it central to all development efforts.

“Undernourished girls and boys face barriers in health, in school performance and later, in the workplace, which limit their human potential and their capacity to contribute to the societies in which they live,” said WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin.
“Prioritising nutrition today is an investment in our collective global future. The investment must involve food, agriculture, health and education systems,” she said.

Today some 842 million people - more than one in eight people in the world – suffer from chronic hunger. Yet even more – around two billion people - lack the vitamins and minerals needed to live healthy lives.

If the global community invested US$1.2 billion per year for five years on reducing micronutrient deficiencies, the benefits in better health, fewer child deaths and increased future earnings would generate gains worth US$15.3 billion.

“In the Philippines, WFP is supporting Government initiatives to prevent hunger and undernutrition among Filipinos affected by conflicts and disasters. To complement Government efforts, WFP is providing highly-fortified schools meals and ready-to-eat food to help bridge essential nutrient gaps among the most vulnerable children, who are our most valuable investments for a better future,” said WFP Philippines Representative and Country Director, Praveen Agrawal.

The theme of this year’s World Food Day is “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition.”

Providing food assistance to 97 million people worldwide, here are some of the ways WFP focuses on nutrition:
- Rapidly increasing the number of children and new mothers who receive new nutritionally enhanced food products.
- Focusing on the crucial 1,000 day window - from the womb to two years of age – where getting sufficient nutrients and calories is crucial for full growth.
- Stepping up assistance through cash and vouchers when food is available in markets, so consumers can buy more fresh and varied local foods.
- Emphasising dietary diversity and fresh foods in its school feeding programmes, by working with local communities and farmers.
- Working with private partners and research institutes to assess the nutritional impact of providing fortified rice in school meals.
- Supporting the creation of a solid evidence base to guide countries in their nutrition policies and strategies, such as the recent Cost of Hunger in Africa study, led by the African Union.

Red Turnip Theater presents "Closer" this October

11:05:00 PM 0 Comments
Red Turnip Theater was formed by five actors who are friends namely Topper Fabregas, Jenny Jamora, Ana Abad Santos, Cris Villonco and Rem Zamora. Their first two productions will be Patrick Marber's Closer which is opening this October and Mike Bartlett's Olivier-winning Cock which is set for first quarter of 2014. Pretty exciting, huh? :)
(L-R) Jenny Jamora, Rem Zamora, Cris Villonco, Topper Fabregas and Ana Abad Santos.
Closer will be directed by Ana Abad Santos with the casts Angel Aquino, Marc Abaya, Bart Guingona, and Cris Villonco. All shows will be held at Whitespace which is located at 2314 Chino Roces Ave. Extension (formerly Pasong Tamo Extension), Makati starting October 4 to 27, 2013 with Friday shows at 9pm, Saturday shows at 3pm & 8 pm (no show on Oct 12) and Sunday shows at 3pm. The last 2 Sunday shows will be at 8pm.

Patrick Marber debuted Closer in London in 1997, and the play won him a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play the following year, as well as the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Foreign Play when it was staged in New York the year after that (it was also nominated for a Tony). While it’s enjoyed numerous productions all around the world, genereal audiences may be most familiar with the work due to its 2004 film adaptation by Mike Nichols that starred Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, and Clive Owen.

“We’re very happy with this cast,” says director Ana Abad Santos. “They each bring their own touches to the roles and have different experiences with the material. It’s very interesting watching them play off of each other.”

Closer is one of those works that excites us as actors and lovers of theater,” says Villonco. “It’s an example of the kind of shows we want to do, which is why we formed Red Turnip.”
(L-R) Ana Abad Santos, Cris Villonco, Rem Zamora, Jenny Jamora and Topper Fabregas.
Cris Villonco
The production of Closer will mark acclaimed film actress Angel Aquino’s debut in a stage play. Aquino was most recently seen in Erik Matti’s On The Job, which debuted at the Directors’ Fortnight at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.  She says, "It's wonderful material to be part of, especially since this is my first time. It's beautifully written. I think it's something that every actor would aspire to be part of so I feel it's a privilege.”
Angel Aquino
Bart Guingona is no stranger to the material, having directed it himself in a production several years ago.
Bart Guingona
TV and film actor Marc Abaya, son of pioneering director Marilou Diaz-Abaya and frontman of rock band Kjwan, also makes his stage debut with Closer.
Marc Abaya
The other members of the crew are John Batalla for Technical Direction & Lighting Design, Gino Gonzales for Set Design, Jethro Joaquin for Sound Design and my favorite costume designer Raven Ong for costumes (of course!).

Tickets are available at TicketWorld (891-9999 or www.ticketworld.com.ph) and also at 215-0788 / 0917-537-8313. Check out Red Turnip Theater on Facebook!

9:58:00 PM 0 Comments
Philstage proudly announces the first and second quarter citations of the "2013 Gawad Buhay!" the Philstage Awards for the Performing Arts.

Tanghalang Pilipino’s “Ibalong,” a dance-musical reimagining of the Bicolano epic, topped the list with 15 citations in the performance and technical categories.

The Philippine Educational Theater Association’s (Peta) “D’Wonder Twins of Boac,” which transposed Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” into the dying days of the old studio system of Philippine movies, was a close second with 14 citations. Both “Ibalong” and “D’Wonder Twins of Boac” are musical productions. No original straight play was cited as an outstanding production in the first two quarters, but Actor’s Actors, Inc.’s staging of John Logan’s Tony Award-winning play “Red” was cited in the newly created category of Outstanding Production of Existing Material for a Play, as well as in seven other categories: Best Ensemble Performance for a Play, Stage Direction (Bart Guingona), Lighting Design (Jolu Escano), Sound Design (Dodo Lim), Set Design (Damien Anne and Baby Imperial-Anne), Male Lead Performance in a Play (Bart Guingona) and Male Featured Performance in a Play (Joaquin Valdes).
Tying with “Red” is 9 Works Theatrical’s “They’re Playing Our Song,” which also got eight citations, including for its two leads, Nikki Gil and Lorenz Martinez.

Meanwhile, in dance, Ballet Philippines’ “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” grabbed 11 citations, including Outstanding Modern Dance Production and Outstanding Ensemble in a Dance Production.

Now on its fifth year, Gawad Buhay! is the first-ever industry awards exclusively for the performing arts juried by an independent panel of critics, scholars, artists and theater enthusiasts. Outstanding individual and group achievements in various artistic and technical aspects of play, musical and dance productions and performances are honored based on quarterly citations deliberated by the jury who are required to watch all productions of Philstage member-companies for the entire year.

From the four quarterly citations, the jury will select the final nominees qualified to win the awards by the end of the performance season. Awarding ceremonies will be in early 2014.

Philstage is the only alliance of professional performing arts organizations in the Philippines. Its members include Ballet Manila, Ballet Philippines, Gantimpala Theater Foundation, Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM), Peta, Repertory Philippines, Tanghalang Pilipino, Trumpets, Actor’s Actors, Inc., 9 Works Theatrical and Philippine Opera Company.
