Marco Polo Ortigas's Lung Hin Welcomes Chinese Chef Leung "Ken" Chi Kwan

11:30:00 AM 0 Comments
Lung Hin, which means "Dragon Pavillion," is Marco Polo Ortigas's Cantonese restaurant located on the 44th floor and has a very nice view of the city, Ortigas in particular. The sleek interiors of the restaurant combined with its expansive layout and divisions for privacy is ideal for gatherings.

Last March 2016, Lung Hin was awarded one of the most outstanding Chinese restaurants outside of China at the 16th China Hotel Industry Golden Horse Awards Gala in Grand Hyatt Guangzhou, China!
The Golden Horse Award (the "Oscar" of the hotel industry)
I'm very excited and privileged to share with you the dishes I sampled that were created by Executive Chef Ken.

For starters, I tried the new drink of the season which is their Mango Kiwi Shake. Even though it's a new drink, it has quickly grown into one of their best-selling signature drink. Just the look of the drink is already an eye candy.

I was so afraid of ruining the two toned drink when it was served but the server asked me to stir it first before taking a sip and it was just perfect! I like how it was sweet from the mango and refreshing because of the kiwi. A really good starter for the next dishes to come!

The first dish is Deep Fried Crispy Tofu with Seaweed Salad. The salad might look like it lacks dressing because of its dry. However, don't be held back because of this. You have to eat the different components of the salad: tofu, seaweed, taro, cabbage, carrots in one big bite! The crunch and the different flavors mixed together are already enough to give the salad its sweet and salty flavors. The freshness of the ingredients brings out the unique taste of the salad.
Deep Fried Crispy Tofu with Seaweed Salad
Who loves crunchy food? I do! So it got me more excited when I saw the next dish which is the Deep Fried Beancurd Leek Rolls with XO Chili Sauce. The XO Chili Sauce was served on a side so for those who don't want their rolls spicy, you may skip the sauce.
Deep Fried Beancurd Leek Rolls with XO Chili Sauce
This dish goes into my long list of favorite dishes because of its light and very crunchy beancurd wrapper! I love how it's not oily despite being deep fried and it feels very light to eat with all the vegetables inside. Somehow it balances the sinful and healthy division of food! I don't feel guilty at all eating more of this.
Look at that skin and all those veggies inside! It's like a treat for those who needs to eat their veggies, right?
For those who are "allergic" to veggies and all things green, please stay! Do not be deceived by the green color of the Spinach Seafood Soup. Even if it's made from veggies, the seafood inside are like little jewels that will push you to eat your veggies in a fun exciting way! You'll soon forget that you're eating veggies and might like to ask for more of this yummy soup!
Spinach Seafood Soup. Look at that bits of shrimp, egg white and tofu! There are also bits of fish and squid in the soup.
Be amazed with this glossy, almost perfect pieces of prawns with a bit of translucent edges of Stir-fried Crystal Prawns! Despite being stir-fried, it's not crunchy nor gummy and the texture of the shrimp is just superb! I love how soft and yet sweet the meat of the shrimps are! They tastes as heavenly as they look and what's more, it's cooked with goji berries which are known to be a little super fruit that helps the kidney, liver and eyesight!
Stir-fried Crystal Prawns. More of these beautiful prawns (plus goji berries) on my plate please!!!
I used to hate eating fish that are served as a whole and I remember an uncle of mine who always tell me to eat fish so I can swim as good as the fish! Well, I do eat them now but not because of that foolish reason but it's because of all the health benefits of eating fish. When the Poached Live Garoupa with Mushroom was served, its aroma filled in the room. It's like the freshness of the fish filled the air wanting us all to have a serving of it!
Poach Live Garoupa with Mushroom. The sauce of the fish is actually very delicious with plain rice! Put your hands up if you're with me and ask for more rice!
Beautiful, shiny and colorful is the Deep Fried Spareribs with Black Vinegar Sauce. Even though the meat has already been touched by the sauce, you'll be surprised that the spareribs still has a crunchy exterior. And the meat inside is oh so juicy that bursts in your mouth! It is another dish that will let you go ask for more and more bowls of rice!
Deep Fried Spareribs with Black Vinegar Sauce. It's sweet, crunchy with soft and juicy meat inside! One piece will never be enough!
To tame the palate of all those dishes with very bold flavors and kind of relax a bit, the Ham and Vegetables in Superior Broth came in perfect timing! The vegetables cleansed the palate a bit with the ham giving a salty kick to awaken the senses that the meal is not yet over. The ham is actually like a bonus with its soft meat and mixing into the freshness of the vegetables telling me that I'm a good girl for eating all those veggies on my plate. Haha! :)
Ham and Vegetables in Superior Broth. It has goji berries too so it's an added healthy bonus to this already healthy dish!
When you thought that the meal is over, came the superstar of all the dishes which is the Fookian Misua! A must for every Chinese feast, the misua is quite al dente with seafood, egg, mushroom and meat! It's the ultimate comfort food when you would like to eat more. I was actually too full from all the dishes before it came out but I still had a bite and I must say, it's also delicious - not too salty and has just the right amount of softness and meats with it!
Fookian Misua
The dessert was served like a pair of lovers who complements one another. One crunchy and one soft treat! I love how the Coconut Mango Jelly are layers of jellies that when eaten together gives a creamy melts in your mouth fruity goodness. The Buchi was also a winner in itself with its crunchy outer layer and warm creamy sweet filling.

I'd like to applaud Chef Ken for the beautiful and superb tasting dishes that will make any Chinese food enthusiast like me go crazy to eat more than I can because of all the good stuff especially those dishes that shouts more rice! :)

Award Winning Artist Banaue Miclat-Janssen Celebrates Her 25th Year with "The Female Heart" set on July

10:01:00 AM 0 Comments
As a prelude to the forthcoming silver linings in the arts of multi-talented artist Banaue Miclat-Janssen next year, the stage is all set for her directorial debut for the UP Playwrights’ Theater production of Linda Faigao-Hall’s “The Female Heart."

The play shall open on July 1 and will run until July 10, 2016 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, University of the Philippines Diliman.

The cast of The Female Heart is composed of Chase Salazar as Adelfa, Al Gatmaitan as Anghel, Peewee O’Hara as Rosario, Sheryll Ceasico as Rosario (alternate), Mark McKeownas as Roger, and Ina Azarcon–Bolivar as young Adelfa.

The Female Heart begins in the Smokey Mountains of Manila, a 170 acre garbage mound in which nearly 30,000 people scrape together a meager life. Anghel and his mother Rosario make ends meet by gathering and reselling scrap metal and other useful trash from the refuse that surrounds them. Anghel's sister, Adelfa, is one of the few teenagers in Smokey Mountain who is able to attend high school.

Upon hearing Adelfa's valedictory speech, Anghel convinces her to continue with her education in college. He tells her he will be able to pay for her tuition by taking a job as a D.I., or dance instructor, at a fancy hotel. In reality, he is actually earning the money for Adelfa's schooling by working as a "macho dancer" in Manila's red light district.

When Anghel falls ill as a result of the sex work, Adelfa must place a listing in a catalogue of mail order brides in an attempt to secure the money needed to pay for Anghel's medical care. She strikes up a correspondence with Roger, a real estate broker with anger management issues living in Brooklyn, and arranges to marry him on the condition that he sends $300 a month to Rosario and Anghel to pay for her brother's treatment in a private facility. Initially, Adelfa sees the trade as a fair one, but as she is confronted with Roger's anger and violence, the deal she made to save her brother turns sour.

Banaue has assembled a formidable artistic team for The Female Heart namely Jem Javier (translation) and Gio Potes (dramaturgy), Ina Azarcon–Bolivar (assistant direction), Io Balanon (set design); Carlo Pagunaling (costume design), JM Cabling (movement design), Ricardo Lorenzo (sound design), and Garrett Picardal (lights design).

Unlike all of the other productions staged at the Guerrero Theater, the set design and execution for “The Female Heart” shall be ‘theater-on-the round.’

Banaue finished B.A. in Theater Arts under the tutelage of Professor Emeritus, Tony Mabesa, at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, and a Master of Fine Arts in Acting (MFA in Acting, a terminal degree) at the Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (Brooklyn College-CUNY).

Banaue won the 1995 Aliw Award for Best Performance for a New Concept Production for “Ginugunita Kita, a Best Actress Award for the Metropolitan Opera Getty Awards for Supernumeraries for “Salome” in 2009, and a Best Actress citation for NYU’s First Run Film Festival for Clarissa de los Reyes’ “Giving Care.” Banaue has also released “Ginugunita Kita,” the album with Jesse Lucas on iTunes and Spotify.

She has also done plays in various languages—English, Filipino, Spanish, Japanese, and some Filipino dialects. She has performed in different countries including Germany, Japan, and has done performances off-Broadway and at the acclaimed Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center in New York. Some of the films she has acted in have been shown in international film festivals in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Korea, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, and many more.

As a director, Banaue has worked with UP’s Dulaang Laboratoryo, Musical Theater Philippines, and most recently, for the first Fringe Manila in 2015, Joshua Lim So’s Palanca Award winning play, “Tungkol kay Angela” under Destiyero Theater Commune.

She is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts, College of Arts and Letters in UP Diliman.

Indeed, Banaue Miclat-Janssen has been connecting her heart, mind and soul into a wholistic process as part of her time capsule in order to become a much more meaningful artist through this directorial project of “The Female Heart.”

"The Female Heart" is produced by special arrangement with the Playwright and Elaine Devlin Literary, Inc., 411 Lafayette Street, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10003.

Get Clucky at Lucky Chick

3:58:00 AM 0 Comments
Being in UP Town Center, Lucky Chick aims to be the new hangout for college kids during their breaks in between classes or just a place to stay after all the stress in class.

The feel of the place is like an upscale canteen where the menu is on one side of the wall where the kitchen is, very bright & well-lighted place for those who would want to read a book while eating or after meals but the best part of it all are the very Instagrammable walls for those who'd want their OOTDs be taken and feel good about their look.

Their menu contains all the good stuff that you'll want to eat during your school breaks. It's simple, direct to the point and easy to eat. No need for extra effort to think on what to eat!

I had the How to make your own luck meal because I wanted to claim my good luck!

So this is How to make your own luck the Lucky Chick style:
1. Choose your flavor - original, hot chick or lemon & garlic
2. Dark or white meat?
3. Choose your gravy:
-> Original - It's the good old fashioned gravy that you've been having since you were a kid.
-> Honey - Sweet and delightful.
-> Apple cider - It's like a vinaigrette that's gravy flavored.
4. Choose your sides.

My lucky meal!
I had the original white meat chicken, got all 3 gravies to try (not all gravies are in the picture) and for my sides, a biscuit & mashed potato.

The Chicken
I chose the white meat so this is the breast part. It's a bit bigger than my fist, juicy meat inside which is a sign that they've cooked it right and with oh so crunchy skin! I love this with the Apple Cider gravy because it feels like eating chicharon with suka but this is even better!

The Mashed Potato
Who could go wrong with making a mashed potato? Well, you're wrong. A lot of mashed potato in restaurants use the "just add water" ones making their mashed potato smooth but not fresh. With Lucky Chick, their mashed potato is a bit on the grainy side with a few lumps (I love the lumps, they're like the bonus pieces!) which shouts freshness at its best!

The Biscuit
Most of the chicken places in the Metro that offers biscuits have a soft, bread or cake-like texture with sugar glaze. Take Lucky Chick's biscuit differently! Since they believe in sticking to the old fashion, original US style biscuit, they really have a biscuit! It's compact, salty and crumbly. I've crumbled it a bit and added gravy, it's a great match with the chicken!

Here's a little extra for sweet tooths! There's a secret dessert that's not on the menu which I had and is coming out as a regular in the menu soon.

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookie
Love that it's big because it's so good! The texture of the cookie is crumbly with oatmeal bits but very well composed because it doesn't all crumble down when cut into half or bitten. I think it will be very good with ice cream which Lucky Chick will hopefully serve.

For those who wants to try Lucky Chick out, they're having an unlimited chicken and rice promo this coming weekend - June 4-5! So go and try it before it's over!

Lucky Chick is located at 2/F UP Town Center, Katipunan, Diliman, Q.C.
For updates, follow its Facebook page: LuckyChickPH or Instagram page: @luckychick.ph and use the hashtag #GetClucky to find honest to goodness photos by their diners!
